WHAT,
ME WORRY?
As
Alfred E Newman would say, ‘What, me worry?” The Red Sox should
hang on if they can just win each remaining series and see where they
are at when they play the last 4 against Houston. The Astros have
stumbled down the stretch and Cleveland now has a better record. The
Terry Francona-led Indians have won 18 in a row. Unless the Yankees
go on a long winning streak, the Sox should be safe. And if they make
the playoffs, maybe they play the Astros rather than the Indians to
start their playoffs.
Next
up is the Oakland A’s for 3 games. The Athletics just swept the
Houston Astros 4 games straight. The last time these teams met in
May, the A’s were a burr in the saddle. Oakland won the first 3
games before Boston won the finale. So these guys will not be
pushovers. Hopefully the Red Sox are a better team at this juncture.
What, me worry?
CHIEFS
SCALP PATRIOTS 42-27
If
you are a Patriots fan, when a home game gets out of hand in the
opponent’s favor, a sick feeling suddenly settles in your stomach.
The mind churns. How could this happen? Well, KC went 12-4 last year.
They are not a fluke. And Head Coach Andy Reid and his Defensive
Coordinator Bob Sutton had a good game plan – for most of the game,
they only rushed 3 men. When Danny Amendola went out with a
concussion, Tom Brady had a hard time finding an open receiver. Once
the Chiefs had an 8-point lead, then they went after Brady with the
pass rush. They were the kryptonite to Superman Brady (3 sacks in the
last quarter).
So
good game plan by Kansas City. But the Patriots blew leads of 17-7
and 21-17 (in the 4th quarter!). The defense wasn’t
playing well before Dont’a Hightower went out with a knee injury, a
reported minor right knee sprain (MCL). It’s been a long time since
the Pats defense gave up two TWO! 75-yard or more touchdown passes.
And both in the 2nd half! The 75-yarder to Tyreek Hill put
KC up 21-17. The 78-yarder to Kareem Hunt made it 28-27 KC. And our
secondary was supposed to be better with Stephon Gilmore.
The
NE run defense was equally porous as it allowed 185 rushing yards to
the Chiefs. Rookie Kareem Hunt had 148 of those. On numerous
occasions no one sealed the edge.
Rob
Ninkovich, please come back! Plus it was surprising to see recent
acquisitions DE Cassius Marsh (9/2) and LB Marquis Flowers (8/29) in
the game. Not much practice time.
More
ugliness: the Patriots were 5 for 15 on 3rd down, 1 for 8
in the 2nd half. They were also 0 for 2 on 4th
down as Mike Gillislee was stopped twice. No QB sneaks this game.
Must have been the KC defense.
Tom
Brady was 16 of 36 with no touchdown passes!
While
the Pats didn’t have much of a pass rush (making Alex Smith look
like a Hall of Famer), they did have as many as the Chiefs – 3.
Robert ‘Trey’ Flowers III had 2 and rookie Deatrich Wise, Jr. the
other.
Next
up – the Saints in New Orleans. Let’s hope that the Patriots have
solved some of those pass defense problems by then because Drew Brees
will savage them if they don’t.
BULLETS
• Travis
Shaw has 29 HRs and 90 RBI for Milwaukee which might beat the Cubs
for 1st.
• The
answer to who’d return punts for the Pats–Danny Amendola, who got
a concussion on one. His replacement? S Patrick Chung whom the Pats
can ill afford to lose.

LAST ISSUE’S TRIVIA QUESTION:
LEON
RUSSELL
OR GLEN CAMPBELL
and was there a good Chain Saw Massacre Movie?-Listening to Steely
Dan.
Ken
Forestal
Yes,
Ken, the answer is Glen Campbell. Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw
Massacre is in my Top 10 horror movies. I jumped when the metal door
opened and Leatherface smacked that kid in the head with a mallet.
One of the remakes, the one with Jessica Biel and R Lee Ermey, was
pretty damn good and actually more violent (Dir. Marcus Nispel).
Meanwhile,
R.I.P. Walter Becker. He and Donald Fagen gave us a lot of wonderful,
twisted takes on life in the US of A. Calling them ‘songs’
doesn’t do them justice. - Z
Too
easy. Glen Campbell.
Chuck
Doherty
Hey,
they can't all be hard. Plus I get to talk about the late, great Glen
Campbell. And what was the theme song of Glen's variety show? Thanks
for reading. - Z
If
memory serves me, it was Gentle on my Mind.
Chuck
Quite
right. Your memory is good. It was John Hartford's Gentle on my Mind.

Dr.

just died. In his will, he requested that his pall bearers all wear
Philadelphia Eagles jerseys. The Eagles fan said it was so he could

Jack’s friend Doug is an antiques dealer. He said he brokered a
deal for a sign for Sir Morgan’s Cove (Worcester) which had a
British flag. Doug said that when the Rolling Stones were on tour
they spotted the sign and stopped at the club for some beverages.
They did an impromptu concert that drew about 500 people. But they
couldn’t advertise it as the Rolling Stones. Instead they were
Little Boy Blue and the Cockroaches. Doug thought it was about 1981
and the Stones might have been doing the Exiles on Main Street Tour.

I
asked Making his Mark and Jordan what NBA player never lost a 7th

championships in 11 of 13 seasons as a player and coach. Russell was
